Starting your university degree is a very exciting time; it means you, as a person, are able to express yourself fully as an adult, and it allows you to learn how to be fully independent, whether you are living at home whilst studying your degree or living away from home.
Before starting university there are some crucial things you need to make sure are ready and in order for your first few days, and alternatively the rest of your years at university.
Below are a few guidelines on how to start off your degree with a bang, letting you know all the important bits you need to keep in mind.
Things you need to think about before and while you’re at university
Saving the extra pennies – It’s a big help to you if you try to save up a little bit before university begins. Saving up will help towards food and other necessities while you’re there; relying on your student loan won’t help, most of it will be taken up by your rent leaving you with not a lot after.
You’re allowed to get homesick – Being away from family can be very over-whelming, especially if you tend to get homesick a lot. This will pass in time once you realise that there is so much to do at university, and most of it will take your mind off home, i.e. classes, homework, etc. To make things a little easier, why not decorate your dorm room so that it has all the familiarities of home; photos and memorabilia will help you feel more settled and a little at ease.
Pace yourself – With the amount of events happening around you at university, you may find yourself always on the go. Take some time out; pace yourself with what events you might want to go to. At university, it is very important to get enough sleep for classes and to take some time out to relax and have some “me” time – remember to give yourself a breather every day.
Join societies – Joining societies is a good way to boost your extracurricular activities while at university. Whatever your interests, there is a society for just about anything from drama, to pottery right through to religion. If you find yourself without a hobby, fear not, for now is the time to be courageous and try out something new.
Learn how to cook the basics – This is the most vital aspect of surviving life at university – knowing how to cook the basics! Before leaving, ask relatives for any easy recipes they recommend or any cooking tips, or buy an easy to make recipe cookbook; it will soon become your saviour. Mastering the basics will enable you to make a whole range of foods; for example, a good minced beef and tomato sauce can be used for various meals such as spaghetti bolognaise; cottage pie; lasagna and shepherd’s pie. Simple ingredients like this can serve up as great meals.
Remember to make the most of your time at university
University will probably be the best time of your life – partying, quiet nights in, shopping, the independence, your new friends and your courses. Live it to the fullest!
