A gap year has been called a lot of things- year abroad, year out, year off, deferred year, bridging year, time off and time out-however it is called, a gap year is that year that is usually taken to do something different, to make decisions, to evaluate or re-evaluate lives or to reset priorities. In the UK, gap year is usually associated with a year that is taken out before university, but a gap year could be taken at anytime of one’s life and although it is traditionally referred to as a gap year, sometimes, it is shorter or longer than a year.
Why is a Gap Year Needed? What to Do with a Year Out?
At cross-roads or during transition periods in life, such as before university, before a new degree, before retirement or before a major decision, it is often important to take some time out to look back on what has been done and where one is headed. A gap year can also come in valuable during a burnout or at a time when one just wants to do something totally different. A lot of people get important answers to pertinent life questions during their gap year. This is a time of adventure and discovery, within and without.
After a decision is taken to make a gap year, the question that often comes into play is what to do with the gap year. It is extremely important to use a gap year constructively; otherwise, the person in question will only feel worst off than he/she was initially. Constructive can be making money for university studies, learning a new culture, doing something that adds to a CV and explore future career options, obtaining certification in a variety of courses that may never be offered through formal education, volunteering, or simply basking up in the sun when a well-deserved rest is need.
Where to Go for a Gap Year?
After a decision is made about what to do with a gap year, the next question is where to go, and if we need to go anywhere at all in the first place. A change of environment or surrounding can work wonders to one’s well being. It is often amazing how just a short time of being away can change one’s perspectives, and make one see himself/herself in a whole different and usually positive light. Even problems that had been nagging for ages seem to appear in perspective that shows them to be solvable.
Is a gap year then only for a wealthy few who can afford long trips across the oceans?
Definitely NO. Although it is important to go away during a gap year, away does not necessarily mean a faraway country. It could be changing towns or cities, or going to a nearby country. It is however an extremely beautiful thing to change scenery completely and try a far off location when it is affordable.
Who Organises the Gap Year?
A gap year could be self organised, a private specialist could be hired or the services of a dedicated gap year organisation could be enlisted. There are now several organisations that help to plan and organise a gap year. If the option of an organisation is chosen, it is extremely important to do a thorough background check on the choice of organisation, and if possible, talk with someone who did a gap year through the help of that organisation.
Many people who have taken a gap year before agree that it is a great confidence booster, as they always come out of the experience stronger, more determined, more informed and much more confident. It’s a short life. Why waste it suffering from burnouts, indecisions or monotony? Time could be taken out to try something new, make new friends, learn a new skill, help someone in need, discover “you” and explore the world.
