Many GMAT books are aimed at students looking to score 700 on the exam. However, most students don’t need a score that high. If you are applying to a good local school, you may simply be looking to get your score in the 600 range. Or, you may be trying to reach the average GMAT score of your target school. I recommend you look up your target school’s average GMAT score, then aim to score slightly higher than that.
Below, I have described a road-map for reaching an average GMAT score in about one month. Keep in mind, this GMAT study plan is for native English speakers:
One Month GMAT Study Plan:
Week 1&2: GMAT quantitative section: first 50 questions from Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency. 20 hours of studying.
Week 3: GMAT Verbal section: First 50 Sentence Correction problems, First 50 Critical Reasoning problems. 20 hours of studying.
Week 4: Practice tests & GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment. 10 hours of studying.
Week 5: Take the exam!
The first step is to acquire The Official Guide the GMAT, 12th edition. This book is published by the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC), the writers of the exam. It contains over 700 retired questions from former exams. Although every GMAT test prep company publishes its own materials, the OG12 will always be the best resource for official GMAT questions.
The Official Guide also has a very valuable tutorial on the format of the exam. I recommend that new students read this section over very carefully and note the timing of each section. Alternatively, there are many short descriptions of the GMAT exam available online; the quickest introduction may be to watch a short video on the format of the GMAT exam.
The next step is to read and re-read the Math summary in the Official Guide to the GMAT. Every single possible quantitative GMAT topic is contained within this section. It is true that the section is very sparse and provides few examples; however, it does tell you all the topics you must be familiar with. Begin by practicing the first 50 GMAT Problem Solving questions from the Official Guide; don’t worry about timing at this point. Mark the questions you miss, and review the answer explanations very carefully to make sure you understand them.
Next, read the GMAT Data Sufficiency section in detail, then practice the first 20 questions from the GMAT Official Guide Data Sufficiency section. After you’ve done this, the GMAT Data Sufficiency answer choices should start to make sense. Eventually you will have to memorize the answer choices; this will come after doing more example problems. Aim to complete the first 50 within the first two weeks of studying.
Overall, I’d recommend you spend about a two weeks focusing exclusively on the GMAT quantitative section. Remember, you are just trying to reach the average GMAT score of your target school!
After you have spent the first two weeks on GMAT quantitative, move on the Verbal. After becoming familiar with the three different question types, start focusing your attention of Sentence Correction. Read about some basic strategies for tackling GMAT sentence correction, and aim to tackle the first 50 questions within the third week.
You’ll also have to spend some time practicing Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension; however, these two question types will already be familiar from other standardized tests such as the SAT.
At the beginning of week 4, you should take the first free GMAT practice test available in the GMATprep software. This will be your first time taking the full exam under timed conditions. Make a careful note of your total score at the end, plus the individual scores of your math and verbal sections. Review all of the questions you missed and make sure you understand them. At the end of the week, take the second exam. If you have scored a 540 or higher on the GMAT exam, you have reached the median GMAT score!
After completing the above GMAT one month study plan, you should be ready to take the GMAT. Good luck! For further questions visit The Gmat Tutor.
